THE IDEAL DOG - IN MY OPINION

All breeders that work and/or compete with their dogs has an idea of what would be the ideal dog. Everyone with some experience knows that the perfect dog doesn’t exist. But in the end of the day, that is what we are all breeding for. Our idea of perfekt.

To find the breeder that suits you and your goal, here are some important questions to ask them:

– What is your ideal dog? Why?
– What are things you dont want to breed and why?

– What are some good and some bad things with your current breeding dogs?
– Who are your ideal buyers?
– What happens when your dogs dont live up to your standards for breeding and sport?

The answers to these questions will vary from breeder to breeder. And personally I will respect any breeder that can answer these questions in depth for their program. If it aligns with what they show. Even if our breeding goals are different.

My ideal dog is environmentally strong. Comfortable and happy everywhere. If a kid accidentally bumps into this dog it will not be a problem. It will not need to be muzzled or trained for vet visits and it has no problems with “stressful environment”. These qualities should be normal for a working dog.

The dog should obviously be:

  • Healthy.
  • Have a strong and functional body.
  • Jump easy.
  • Like to bite and prefer to do so with a full mouth and hard.
  • Enjoy a fight, and push forward in it.

Pressure should not be something that scare them. Any sport related pressure scenario should never be something the dog has to «learn» to tolerate or need months to overcome. It should genetically just be good. The dog needs be independent enough to work alone without support, and at the same time be trainable enough to work together. It should be a good natural searcher. The dog should have plenty of drive, and at the same time be bale to relax when it’s not working. I could definitely continue my list, but these are some of the things I would put in my recipe (if it was that easy!).

To find a dog that checks every box is impossible. They are individuals with different strengths and weaknesses. But there are some qualities that I would prefer to steer clear. Even if the dog is near perfect.

– The ability to function everywhere without having to manage and/or muzzle the dog.

– It should be friendly/neutral and never show any unnecessary aggression for normal life situations.

– I would accept a dog with some dog-aggression, but never fear or aggression towards people.

– Dogs that need extra time and work to handle pressure of any kind.

– Dogs that can’t relax and co exist.

It’s important to remember that perfekt doesn’t exist. Breeding is never about only one individual, but two dogs chosen to be as good as possible together. Unfortunately the best match on paper isn’t always the perfect match in real life. Some things we can’t control even when we do all the right research and tests.

When a dog in my program doesn’t live up to my expectations it will be excluded from the breeding program. I also don’t expect all puppies in every litter to be good enough to breed. I also don’t expect every dog I buy for breeding purpose to be what I hope for.

Dogs that doesn’t fit will be given to the co-owner, or sold for a pet/sport-home. I will always be transparent about the reason. I will never just breed what I have available. It is good, or it is out.

AAVA

Aava is a phenomenal sport dog. Her participation in the dog sport world went down in history as the only tervueren to date to achieve 4th place in the Mondioring World Championship as well as the Decoy´s Choice award.

FRITZ

Fritz is overall a better and more complete dog than his mother. He is in many ways harder to train and compete with, but outside of that he is uncomplicated, neutral and easy dog. Ive had this dog with me around the world and he shows time and time again that he is a confident, stable and friendly dog. Yet has all the power and drive you want in a working or sport dog.
